Since deciding to focus my
energy into the circuitous components of Art, Architecture and Urban
Restoration, I have been traveling in networks of
idealism which are inhabited by inspirational people who have expanded my
margins of creativity and quality of life. I truly hope to find time and
space in which to draw conclusions from my sculptural past and illuminate my
present artistic configuration through the blending of traditional and modern
sculptural techniques with science and architecture.
My artistic work to this point is an expression of the future prehistoric.
From illustrated biology, I have found a trove of shapes to be observed and
mixed
into sculptures about phantom parasites, lost teeth, boney armor plates and bird
beaks. From persistent internal postulations about my time and place on this
planet, the roots of my sculpture have grown.
When trying to make a new mythology for myself through sculpture, I begin by
harvesting biomorphic elements to assemble into creatures that reflect
viewpoints from my personal character. These creatures are tracked and captured
with insight and instinct. During the research and development of
sculpture, I hope to discover the ancient archetypes of civilization as embodied
in modern world conditions. Hopefully, the medium, method and myth align for a
sublime learning experience.
After college graduation, I began putting my metal forming skills to work
making musical pipes for traditional church organs. The experience of making a
giant traditional instrument that will inspire generations of spiritual
congregations, after I am no more, was very fulfilling. The idea of expression
through sound is parallel and equal to my idea of expression through shape or
color. My appreciation for sound and music run as deep as my need to build and
assemble. The idea of making sonic sculpture is very exciting.
My affinity for architectural elements led me to earn a living for many years
as a trim/finish carpenter. Working with trade specific methods and materials,
I became aware of the intricacies of interior residential spaces. These
acquired trade skills have put me into contact with an ever growing urban
restoration movement. I see traces of the future prehistoric expressed within
this movement. Applying an aesthetically informed consciousness of the
beauties of organic nature to raw architectural space is a goal of mine.
Mixing art with science and philosophy has been an approach to creativity
since I first processed conceptual art. It has provided a pluralistic viewpoint
from which I have distilled my personal world into sculptural objects. I come
from a family of teachers, carpenters, engineers and pilots. I have married
into a family of educators, lawyers, doctors and scientists. Wide ranging
conversations are expected and enjoyed. Sincerity and the absurd go a long way
with me.
Through collaboration and dialogue, the vast resources of imagination and
inspiration will endure and the cross-pollination of different disciplines
will offer up the wild and fantastic world we all hope for.
